Giclee print of St. John's Church in Richmond, VA's historic Church Hill neighborhood. As the oldest church in the City of Richmond, St. John's Church is known for many things, but best known as the site of Patrick Henry's famous "Give me liberty, or give me death!" speech on March 23, 1775. The land that the church stands on was donated by William Byrd II; also donated by Byrd was the timber used to build the structure as well as the firewood used in the kiln that fired the bricks in the foundation. The church was built by Col. Richard Randolph, Thomas Jefferson's great uncle, and was completed on June 10, 1741. Over the years additions have been made to the building, but the original structure stands as the transept of the church.
