New Print Tuesday: St. John's Church - Richmond VA Art
March 23, 2016
New Print Tuesday lives to see another week! This week is brought to you by St. John's Church in Richmond Va's Church Hill neighborhood.
Ever wondered what put the "Church" in Church Hill? Well wonder no more. St. John's is the church you've been looking for! Built in 1741 by Col. Richard Randolph (The great uncle to the one and only Thomas Jefferson #goHoos!) on land and with timber donated by William Byrd II. Although the building has been added onto throughout the years, the original structure stands as the transept (consider that your word of the day) of the current church.
Is it possible anything else significant happened at St. John's? Of course it is! This is the also site of Patrick Henry's famous "Give me liberty, or give me death!" speech! (Fun fact: Patrick Henry gave his famous speech on March 23. Think this New Print Tuesday is a coincidence? Yes, actually it is!) Now given all that, I dare you to name something more Richmond than St. John's Church!
